Hey, Y’all! It’s Catherine here, and I’m excited to share some thoughts on rediscovering your fitness journey as a mom.
As an overstimulated, over caffeinated busy mom of three little ones, I can empathize, sympathize, and understand the unique challenges we face when trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle amidst sleepless nights, busy schedules, and the overall demands of motherhood.
But, taking care of our physical health is crucial, not just for us but for our family members too. So, let’s dive into some great ways to integrate fitness into our everyday life.
The First Step: Embracing Your New Fitness Journey
The first step in any fitness journey is embracing the fact that it’s going to be different from before-as is your new mom bod. As new moms, our bodies have gone through significant changes, and it’s essential to acknowledge and respect that. Remember, moms come in all shapes and sizes, and our fitness goals should reflect our current fitness level and personal needs.
Finding Time for Fitness in Your Busy Schedule
Finding time for physical activity can seem impossible with a busy schedule, but it’s all about incorporating fitness into your daily routine. Here are some practical tips:
- Incorporate Exercise into Daily Activities:
- Use nap time or playtime to squeeze in a quick workout. Even 10-15 minutes of exercise can make a difference.
- Involve your baby in your fitness routine. Exercises like stroller walks or baby yoga can be both fun and effective.
- Quick Home Workouts:
- Look for home workout videos that require minimal equipment and can be done in short bursts. There are plenty of options available on social media platforms.
- Focus on exercises that target key areas, like your abdominal muscles, to regain core strength.
- Set Realistic Goals:
- Start with small, achievable goals. This could be as simple as a daily walk or a few minutes of stretching.
- Celebrate each milestone to stay motivated.
The Best Part: Making Fitness Fun
The best part of rediscovering your fitness journey is finding activities that you enjoy.
Whether it’s dancing, hiking, or a new fitness class, engaging in physical activities that make you happy will boost your energy levels and keep you coming back for more. For me, I found a group of people to play on an indoor soccer team with. It has been my gateway back into fitness. It’s fun, planned alone time away from my house and it makes all of the difference.
Integrating Fitness into Everyday Life
- Family Activities: Turn family time into active time. Go for bike rides, play in the park, or have a dance party at home. These activities can help you stay fit and create wonderful memories with your family.
- Social Support: Join a local mom fitness group or an online community. A sense of belonging and support from others on a similar journey can be incredibly motivating.
Maintaining Motivation and Commitment
Staying motivated can be tough, but it’s important to remind yourself why you started. Here are some tips to keep going:
- Track Your Progress: Keep a fitness journal or use a fitness app to track your workouts and progress… or workout with one of your friends. I found that I am less likely to cancel when I know my friend is waiting down the block for our neighborhood walk.
- Reward Yourself: Celebrate your achievements with small rewards, like a relaxing bath or a new workout outfit.
- Seek Expert Advice: If you’re struggling, consider consulting a fitness professional who can tailor a program to your needs.
Self-Care and the Role of Feel-Good Hormones
Remember, physical activity releases feel-good hormones, such as endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine, which are essential for improving your mood and overall well-being. Endorphins, often known as “runner’s high,” help reduce pain and induce feelings of euphoria. Serotonin, a key neurotransmitter, helps regulate mood, sleep, and appetite.
Dopamine, the “reward hormone,” is associated with pleasure and motivation. Prioritizing fitness is a form of self-care that can help you manage the stresses of motherhood and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Final Thoughts
Rediscovering your fitness journey as a mom is about finding what works for you and your family. It’s about making small, sustainable changes and celebrating each step along the way. With the demands of motherhood, it can be challenging, but the benefits for your physical and mental health are well worth it. Here’s to a newfound commitment to fitness and a healthier, happier you!
Thank you for joining me on this journey. Until next time, stay strong and keep moving!
